Number of Learners in Class: 3 - 10
Length of Class: 30 minutes
Type of Class: 12 weeks
Welcome to Math Grade 2 - our full year program consists of three separate terms and two options for live weekly meetings.
Option 1: One live online meeting per week and includes curriculum. Each term is billed individually based on the number of weeks in it and will require individual enrolment.
Option 2: For families wishing for additional math support we also offer a second live weekly option. This option provides a second live online meeting weekly. This second meeting with the instructor helps to ensure learners have ample time to practice and master concepts and allows for more in-depth exploration of material as well as testing (testing is optional to all families but only available with the second live meeting option). These secondary days must also be enrolled into separately each term.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The main goals of mathematics education are to prepare students to:
- Use mathematics confidently to solve problems
- Communicate and reason mathematically
- Commit themselves to lifelong learning
This live online, instructor led math class will help your learner thrive in mathematics this year. Course includes all curriculum (meets or exceeds all provincial curricular standards). Learners will attend live online instruction and will be given homework to completely throughout the week. Course will include marked assignments, projects, and an end of term written summary to assist documenting learner understanding. Families wishing to have learners complete testing will need to also enrol in the twice weekly option.
NOTE:
No classes on statutory holidays or Easter Monday (Oct 10th, Nov 11th, Apr 7th, Apr 10 and May 22nd).
No classes during winter break Dec 19th - 30th 2022
No classes during spring break Mar 13 - 24th 2023
Number concepts:
· counting:
— skip-counting by 2, 5, and 10:
using different starting points
increasing and decreasing (forward and backward)
· Quantities to 100 can be arranged and recognized:
— comparing and ordering numbers to 100
— benchmarks of 25, 50, and 100
— place value:
understanding of 10s and 1s
understanding the relationship between digit places and their value, to 99 (e.g., the digit 4 in 49 has the value of 40)
decomposing two-digit numbers into 10s and 1s
· even and odd numbers
Facts to 20:
· adding and subtracting numbers to 20
· fluency with maths strategies for addition and subtraction (e.g., making or bridging 10, decomposing, identifying related doubles, adding on to find
the difference)
Addition and subtraction to 100:
· decomposing numbers to 100
· estimating sums and differences to 100
· using strategies such as looking for multiples of 10, friendly numbers (e.g., 48 + 37, 37 = 35 + 2, 48 + 2, 50 + 35 = 85), decomposing into 10s and 1s
and recomposing (e.g., 48 + 37, 40 + 30 = 70, 8 +7 = 15, 70 +15 = 85), and compensating (e.g., 48 + 37, 48 +2 = 50, 37 – 2 = 35, 50 + 35 = 80)
· adding up to find the difference
· using an open number line, hundred chart, ten-frames
· using addition and subtraction in real-life contexts and problem-based situations
· whole-class number talks
Financial literacy:
· counting simple mixed combinations of coins to 100 cents
· introduction to the concepts of spending and saving, integrating the concepts of wants and needs
