Description

Number of Learners in Class: 3 – 8
Length of Class: 50 minutes

Type of Class: 1 class per week for 5 weeks

An introduction to the science of ecology and how it applies to the major terrestrial, freshwater, ocean, and soil ecosystems.

Week 1: Terrestrial Ecosystems:
Learners will study one of the most important theories in the field of ecology: the Darwin Theory. We will discuss its key elements and explore the theory together to see how it applies to species through group exercises. We will examine the primary needs of animals and plants and their respective challenges. Furthermore, we will learn about the classification of species in Canada and how the status of a species is determined. The concept of ecozones will be discussed and the 20 different zones in Canada will be covered, including the forested regions.

Week 2: Freshwater Ecosystems:
We will learn why freshwater is a valuable resource for us. We will discuss many topics such as nutrient cycling, animal life, ecological niche, unique habitats, and finally the importance of conservation.

Week 3: Oceans Ecosystems:
Learners will grasp how to identify the world's oceans. They will learn about some of the services provided by the oceans such as oxygen generation and temperature regulation. We will also cover the subject of currents and thermohaline. Finally, we will discuss the incredible marine life and related concepts. Throughout the class, we will have a variety of group discussions and fun learning exercises.

Week 4: Soil Ecology:
In this class, we will explore soil ecology. It is often one of the forgotten pieces, but crucial to the proper functioning of the natural environment. Learners will discover soil, its different types, and functions! We will discuss the importance of microorganisms, macroorganisms, and their functions. Finally, together we will try to understand how soil ecosystems directly impact humans and their activities such as agriculture, forestry, urban planning, etc.

Week 5:

This course is intended for learners with no previous training in this subject. Only scientific spirit and interest are required. Learners will attend short 10-minute interactive lectures in the form of short descriptive videos or discussions for each subsection. These lectures will contain a discussion exploring the learner's perceptions around the topics before and after the explanation, allowing us to develop the more nuanced facets further. Theories will be presented using concrete examples. The educator will use a coaching approach to present the theories and use activities, demonstrations, and discussions.

Educator Qualifications - Marie-Ève Denis Bordeleau:

I have been attracted to the environment, wildlife, and teaching others all my life. In addition, I have a passion for equestrian sports, which I have taught for more than 6 years, practically and theoretically, to children from 6 years to adults in their fifties, all while completing my studies. My interest in education led me to complete a year of studies in psychology. Overshadowed by my interest in the environment, I changed my field of study to the environment and obtained a bachelor's degree in ecology and environment. I gained field experience through various research opportunities, notably on the biotic impact of white-tailed deer on the regeneration of the Eardley Escarpment. My professional experience has taken me into land management and biology, where I have worked on everything from environmental rights to microbiology. I have always enjoyed sharing my knowledge in this field and my other areas of expertise. By combining my two passions, I could talk about the environment and its protection while getting young people more informed.
