Description

Colors are more than meets the eye! In this fun and colorful Science Corner project, we’ll explore the hidden world of pigments through a process called paper chromatography. You’ll learn how colors are made up of different molecules that blend to form the shades we see. But when water travels through paper, it separates these pigments, revealing the hidden colors that mixed together to create the original hue.

By creating chromatography flowers, you’ll watch the colors spread and change right before your eyes, unlocking a rainbow of scientific discovery! Perfect for curious minds who love science and creativity.

Supply List for Chromatography Flowers Project

  • White coffee filters (or chromatography paper) (Paper towel can also be used in a pinch though the result isn't as nice)
  • Washable markers (variety of colours - Secondary or Tertiary work best!)
  • Small cups or jars (for water)
  • Water
  • Pipettes or droppers (optional, for controlled water application)
  • Paper towels (for clean-up)
  • Scissors (to cut flower shapes from filters)
  • Plastic or protective table covering (to prevent messes)
  • Tape or glue (optional, for assembling flowers)
  • Green pipe cleaners or straws (optional, for flower stems)

Note to parents: Parents are responsible for keeping their children safe. While parents are not permitted to actively be on camera and participate in class, parents are always welcome to be nearby to support learners. During Science Corner, it's requested that parents stay with young learners to help them through each experiment. Also, note that while each class is scheduled for 25 minutes, Science Corner classes may end early depending on how quickly learners move through the experiments.
