Description

Science Corner: Ice Cream Fun

Description:
Get ready for a sweet adventure in our Science Corner - Ice Cream class. Kids will explore the science behind making ice cream from scratch using simple ingredients and a bit of chemistry. This hands-on class combines the joy of creating a delicious treat with the excitement of a science experiment. Kids will learn how salt and ice work together to freeze their ice cream mixture, turning everyday ingredients into a creamy dessert. As a bonus, they’ll have the chance to customize their ice cream with sprinkles, chocolate sauce, and fruit—the “best part” of the experience!

Supplies List:

  • ½ cup half and half (cream and milk)
  • ¼ tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups ice
  • ⅓ cup kosher or rock salt
  • Gallon size zip-top bag(s)
  • Quart size zip-top bag(s)
  • Sprinkles, chocolate sauce, fruit (optional but highly recommended for added fun!)

Alternatively, two bowls can be used, as shown in the class description . However, it can be difficult for learners to hold the bowl still while mixing sufficiently or to use a slow-speed hand mixer, but it is a good alternative to reduce plastic waste.

What to Expect:
Kids will measure, mix, and shake their way to homemade ice cream while discovering the science that makes it all possible. The class is designed to be interactive and fun, with plenty of opportunities to experiment and enjoy the results. Don’t forget to bring your appetite!

Note to parents: Parents are responsible for keeping their children safe. While parents are not permitted to actively be on camera and participate in class parents are always welcome to be nearby to support learners and during Science Corner, it's requested that parents stay with young learners to help them through each experiment. Also, note that while each class is scheduled for 25 min, Science Corner classes may end early depending on how quickly learners move through the experiments.
